The Software Engineer, Broadcast is responsible for daily support and regular maintenance of ION’s television station operations engineering website and broadcast systems. This is a technician role, administering user-facing system assistance, as well as application and database back-end troubleshooting and issue resolution. The role manages the broadcast equipment inventory at all of our 60 television stations and within our central technical location. The role interfaces with vendors on required software updates and related documentation. No production equipment is part of this job responsibility- the role is purely focused on our over-the-air broadcast and monitoring equipment and systems. The person will oversee the equipment that takes our signal from the satellite to the television station, and monitors its output.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

• Design, test, install and maintain software systems critical to broadcast operations;

• Administer ION engineering website and all related broadcast systems databases (Footprints, SNMP Manager, Compliance logging and others as needed), including repairs and running backups;

• Maintain and upgrade station broadcast equipment to stay current with vendor recommendations and security protocols; 

• Research, test and assist in installing and configuring new broadcast equipment for the ION station group

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

• Ability to create and maintain web pages and applications for the ION engineering website;

• Proficient with Windows and Linux (Server and Desktop) operating systems; 

• Excellent communicator and listener with ability to troubleshoot technical issues and determine critical path to resolution in a timely manner; 

• Ability to prioritize, multitask and work in a fast paced, heterogeneous technical environment; 

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Full Stack web development, computer programming and database administration;

• Must possess excellent analytical, resourceful and creative problem solving skills;

• Self-starter and team player, willing to collaborate and provide forward-looking solutions; 

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

The Chief Broadcast Engineer is responsible for the leadership and management of all day-to-day technical and business operations of the Knoxville, TN, station. This hands-on individual will manage and maintain all broadcast equipment and systems used in the daily operation of the station as well as any ancillary systems used in the support and troubleshooting of technical issues as they arise. The Chief Broadcast Engineer will also work closely with the Station Engineer/Technician in developing an understanding of the administrative needs of the station should the need arise for coverage.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Manage and maintain all broadcast equipment/systems responsible for daily on-air operation of the station. Use of RF engineering knowledge to maintain and repair all technical equipment in studio and transmitter facilities, satellite downlink/uplink, and microwave transmission systems;
  • Manage and maintain all ancillary systems responsible for supporting the on-air operation, such as HVAC, networking, electrical, and mechanical;
  • Exercise knowledge of FCC rules and regulations to protect the entity’s license;
  • Proactively engage with necessary third parties to resolve technical issues in an expedited manner as they arise;
  • Carry out troubleshooting as needed or escalate to Engineering Support for further diagnosis;
  • Implement new engineering projects as directed by RDE, Quality Assurance, or Engineering Support. Manage project(s) and report status to Regional Director of Engineering as needed;
  • 24/7 on-call availability to ensure continuous operation of the station;
  • May be responsible for certain administrative duties related to business and operation transactions;

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Degree in Engineering (Electrical or Electronic) or a related field and/or a minimum of five (5) years of experience in broadcast station operations or engineering; Bachelor’s degree is preferred;
  • Broadcast Engineering Certification, i.e. FCC license, Society of Broadcast Engineer (SBE) certification would be a plus;
  • High proficiency with computers to include Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Strong time management skills in meeting deadlines while maintaining attention to detail;
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the region on an as needed basis;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record;
  • Must have a strong understanding of applicable electrical, computer networking, mechanical, structural and civil engineering methods;

The Repack Project Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day support and integration of technology at all broadcast stations of ION Media nationwide. We are searching for a focused, detail-oriented and dynamic technical professional to ensure that ION has a high-quality, consistent transmission in each DMA and a distribution platform that conforms or exceeds FCC and company requirements. This hands-on position has a very heavy emphasis on project management and requires a complete understanding of the technical operation of a television station and network. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work side by side with the Vice President, Engineering, Support and Services on the strategy, plan and implementation of the spectrum realignment at broadcast television facilities nationwide.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Proficient in technical construction techniques, both hands-on and project management;
  • Familiar with commercial/broadcast applications for building infrastructure, integration and electronics;
  • Execute electrical and mechanical calculations, such as electrical loads and distribution, power factors, heat loads, transmitter TPO and ERP;
  • Able to perform transmission systems design, implementation and quality assurance;
  • Propose and create system designs, specifications and illustrations to align the broadcast model with ION strategies and visions;
  • Identify creative ways to reduce cost by streamlining processes and systems;
  • Interact heavily with vendors, contractors, landlords, local municipalities and other staff to design, implement and execute broadcast system construction-related projects;

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, training or work experience;
  • 5 years of experience in television broadcast engineering;   
  • Track record in multitask project management in a technical environment;
  • Knowledge and/or familiarity of IOT and solid state transmitters (UHF and VHF), transmission systems including combiners, filters, antennas and line, high voltage, tower structures, and microwave STL equipment;
  • Ability to perform transmitter proofs, line sweeps and other electrical measurements a plus;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team setting;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to communicate highly technical concepts in a non-technical manner;

The Station Technician is responsible for assisting the Chief Broadcast Engineer with the day-to-day technical and business operations of the Kansas City, KS, ION station. This hands-on individual will have the day-to-day responsibilities for monitoring, controlling and reporting the operability of the station’s master control and transmitter operations, as well as having the opportunity to work closely with the Chief Broadcast Engineer in the maintenance of the studio, transmitter and distribution delivery equipment.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Monitor, control and report to the operability of station’s master control and transmitter operations;
  • Monitor and report station outages;
  • Work together with Chief Broadcast Engineer in daily operation of studio, transmitter and distribution delivery;
  • Develop the skills and knowledge to troubleshoot television transmitter and facility issues with Chief Broadcast Engineer;
  • Develop the skills and knowledge to maintain systems responsible for supporting the on-air operation, such as HVAC, networking, electrical, and mechanical;
  • Assist legal and corporate in the maintenance of the station public file in accordance with FCC requirements; Track and confirm FCC online station files;
  • At the direction of the Chief Broadcast Engineer:
    • Liaison for all cable, DBS and Telco operators within market;
    • Operate, log and maintain EAS tests and equipment;
    • Proactively engage with necessary third parties to resolve technical issues in an expedited manner as they arise;
    • Carry out troubleshooting as needed or escalate to engineering support for further diagnosis; 
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures, including corporate guidelines and best practices;
  • May be responsible for certain administrative duties related to business and operation transactions;
  • Additional coursework and in-house training is required to advance to a Station Engineer;
  • Other duties as assigned

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree and at least two (2) years of experience in broadcast station operations, engineering or related industry;
  • Comfort and willingness to learn, implement, and operate new technology related to broadcasting and content delivery;
  • Strong proficiency with computers, to include Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines;
  • Must be physically able to bend, lift and carry up to a maximum of 35 lbs., as well as climb on step-stools, ladders and other necessary equipment;
  • Ability and willingness to travel to transmitter sites and travel throughout the region on an as needed basis;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record;
  • Some understanding, via additional course work, of applicable electrical, computer networking, mechanical, structural and civil engineering methods is desired;

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • 10+ years of television operations management experience
  • 8+ years of managerial experience, to include performance management, career management and employee relations; solid experience overseeing (indirect reporting relationships) teams consisting of 20+ regular full-time staff
  • Understanding of video system flows, encoding, digital storage systems, automation systems, graphic systems, editing systems, signal flows, video and audio test equipment, technical specifications for video and audio in SDI, HD and ASI; media management and satellite transmission and distribution
  • Knowledge of television production, editing, engineering, satellite transmission and distribution systems required
  • Solid ability to balance production needs with operational capabilities, and to provide solutions that address and balance both wherever applicable
